The economic woes that have befallen the UK over the past year have proved a major lesson to many about controlling one’s finances. The recession has led to the realisation by some people that savings can be a great help in times of economic hardship. The speed with which the downturn hit Britain left a great many people reeling. They simply did not see it coming and were unprepared for the devastating effects that it had on the economy.

One of the questions that was being asked was “What can I do to help my family from being so badly affected by future recessions?” A solution that is proving popular is to start saving to protect against hard times in the future. As the family is the hub of many people’s lives some potential savers have found that family investments are a logical way to start investing for the future financial security of those closest to them. One sort of family investment that is available from some financial services providers is the Child Trust Fund. For example, Scottish Friendly provide family investments of this kind. Another provider can be found here.

There are other types of family investments apart from the Child Trust Fund that are on the market. Savers who want to find out more about this sort of investment can do so by clicking here.

The potential of family investments is something that is proving very alluring to UK savers and more and more investors are looking at the wealth building possibilities offered by this type of investment.

The Child Trust Fund is something of a godsend for those parents, grandparents and other relatives who are concerned about building a nest egg for the younger generation of family members. It is tailored to their needs and, indeed, it was set up by the UK Government to try to persuade more people to save for the future.

One of the factors that has led many parents to use the Child Trust Fund to save for their sons and daughters is the fact that is the Fund offers a way to make tax free savings. Parents get a two hundred and fifty pound voucher that they can invest for their offspring in a Child Trust Fund and other family members or friends can then also make contributions to the Fund as well.

When the young person reaches eighteen he or she will receive a lump sum, totally free of Capital Gains and Income Tax and they can use this money as they wish. It can be used to help fund a college or University education or to put a deposit down on a flat or for any other purpose. One of the reasons why the British Government set up the fund is too encourage more people to save and some of the young people who benefit from the Fund may want to invest the money when they receive it.

There are many reasons for the popularity of this type of saving and it is something that many parents and relatives are using to build financial security for the younger members of their families.

Many parents accept that making provision for the future is an important step in bringing up a child. It is increasingly seen as a vital step in giving a son or daughter a monetary cushion that will help him or her get over the financial hurdles that he or she will encounter in life. What is less clear to many is the best way to make these financial provisions. One has only to look at a newspaper these days to read of recession and the economic volatility of the stock market.

The most important point to get across to parents and other potential savers who want to save for children is that in the UK there are ways to save that are tax free. One of these ways is through a Child Trust Fund. Using a tax free vehicle for saving will make a very substantial difference to the pay out when the child reaches the age of 18.

To sum up, the best advice for parents is to select a tax free type of savings scheme to make sure that their son or daughter gains the maximum benefit.

Savings are something that we should always prioritise but in the case of parents there are other things that may seem a more urgent concern. With the threat of Swine Flu causing so much worry for the parents of young children in the UK at the present time it is easy for seemingly less immediate threats to the welfare of a child to be overlooked.

This is something that must be tackled because a timely savings plan can protect a child from money problems in the future and will lead to a healthy outlook for kids when they reach the age of eighteen. Having money available at that age will give them options as to what to do after leaving school.

The motto of “prevention is better than cure” is well known and that principle applies in the world of saving and investing too. It is better to start saving for a child early on so that in later life the option of going to University is not ruled out due to lack of funds. In fact there is talk of Universities actually charging more in the future than they do now and if this happens it will put more pressure on parents to find ways of helping their children get a good University education.

The importance of preparing for your children’s future is something that cannot be underestimated. Planning is all important and the investment choices you make when your kids are small can make a huge difference to them in later life. If you recognise the importance of planning and making strategic use of tax-free investments like the Child Trust Fund you will be provide a considerable sum of money to build up over the years in the Child Trust Fund.

Nowadays every child born in the UK is eligible for a £250 child trust fund voucher and if parents or relatives pay in to the account over the formative years of the youngster the boy or girl will have a nest egg that will help with Uni fees, a first car or a deposit on a house. It will certainly ease the financial burden and give them some capital at a time when they need it most.

Children grow up fast which means it is important to start thinking about saving when they’re young. By saving from just £10 to £25 a month with Scottish Friendly’s Child Bond while they are children you could aid them when they are older. Scenarios where this may prove invaluable may include helping to pay for university fees or for the deposit on a place to live.

You can save tax-free for any child with a Scottish Friendly Child Bond. It’s tax-free as it’s a friendly society savings plan, and as such under present-day law it grows free of income or capital gains tax. It can be a wonderful way for parents, grandparents, family members and friends to make a major financial difference when the childen are older. In a nutshell the Child Bond is a with-profits investment plan: It invests for long-term growth as well as a certain element of security, in stocks and shares, fixed interest funds and cash. The invested amount accrues through the addition of potential yearly bonuses and at the relevant time when the bond reaches maturity there is a tax-free payout. The value of bonuses depends on how much profit we make and how we distribute it. It is important to bear in mind that bonuses are not guaranteed.

The Child Bond can last for a minimum of ten years, but it is possible to invest for longer should you wish – perhaps to coincide with an 18th or 21st birthday. You can save either monthly, annually or with a lump sum payment. It’s completely up to you. It should be borne in mind that if the plan is cashed in at a point prior to the end of the term, the amount the child will receive may be less than the amount paid in.

If you go for the monthly option, you can begin saving from as little as £10 a month – up to a maximum of £25 per month. Or you can make yearly payments of up to £270 a year. You can also pay all of the premiums in one go through our lump sum funding plan. If you invest the maximum possible amount of £2,340 for a 10 year period, this actually invests £270 a year into the Child Bond. The minimum lump sum of £1,040 will provide £120 a year for 10 years – a total of £1,200. This provides a route for you to make payment of all your premiums in one go and is particularly popular with grandparents who like the reassurance of knowing all premiums for the whole length of the term of the plan are taken care of. Life cover is included with this plan so you should consider if this is apposite for your financial needs.

Do you know what the Child Trust Fund is? A remarkably sparse number of parents seem to appreciate that all new babies are given a free £250 voucher from the government. This voucher may be invested in any one of three sorts of CTF account, Stakeholder – a shares-based account that switches into cash, a savings account or a shares account. It is an excellent way to save for the future needs of an infant.

Scottish Friendly is an accredited provider of the Child Trust Fund. The Government is eager for the general public to have access to Stakeholder accounts and this is the form of account that we are providing.

This means that:

• Investments are placed into Scottish Friendly’s Managed Growth Fund, which aims to provide strong growth potential

• An investment is made partly in shares to get the benefit of potentially higher returns over 18 years, compared to a cash deposit account (although the value of shares can decrease as well as go up whereas capital would be protected in a deposit account)

• It comes with a low ‘Stakeholder’ funds charge of only 1.5% per year

• When attaining the age of 18 the young person will receive a lump sum, totally free of Capital Gains and Income Tax under current legislation

• It’s affordable – additional payments can be put in the account from only £10

A notable attraction of the Child Trust Fund is that anyone – parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends – may give to the Fund to an uppermost limit of £1,200 per year to help increase the child’s Fund (once added, this money is not able to be withdrawn). In a nutshell our Stakeholder account provides a good balance between possible high returns and a lower level of risk. There’s also the additional assurance that our account meets with the Government’s stakeholder criteria. However this does not mean that returns are assured or that Stakeholder accounts are suitable for everyone. Bear in mind that the value of shares in the Managed Growth Fund (where your Child Trust Fund money is placed) can go down as well as rise and is not guaranteed.

Only children who were born on or after 1st September 2002 are permitted to open a Child Trust Fund. If you have children born before the 1st of September 2002 who are not qualified you could think about saving for them with a Child Bond – it’s a tax-free savings plan aiming for long-term growth. The fact is that investing for your children is a sensible means of preparing for possible future credit crunches.
